England Search for World Cup Training Facilities Amidst Concerns of Missing Out On First-Choice Location to the Dutch.
The FA has sent scouts to the America this week to look at potential bases for the forthcoming global finals, amidst growing worries that their first-choice site could be taken by the Holland.
Tournament Draw Complexities Alter Arrangements
Manager Thomas Tuchel had previously cleared an FA strategy for England to locate in Kansas following a warm-up training period in Fort Lauderdale. But, following the recent group stage draw, there are now fears that the Netherlands, who play their group stage matches in Kansas, will be awarded priority on the desired facility at Sporting Kansas City—a state-of-the-art centre used by US Soccer.
FIFA assigns training bases based on geographic location and FIFA rankings if there is competition, with the draw possibly pitting the FA against the Netherlands and Argentina for bases in the tournament's south-central region.
Exploring Alternative Locations
With England's group fixtures scheduled to take place in Dallas, Boston, and New Jersey, the FA is now understood to be investigating other locations on the US East Coast. The FA began its scouting process for training camps at the beginning of the year, with Tuchel and director of football John McDermott touring possible locations during the Club World Cup last summer.
Despite this advanced preparation, there was always an understanding that the final tournament draw could significantly alter their plans.
Knockout Stage Logistics Strategy
The Three Lions have the eighth most arduous group stage draw in terms of mileage. Topping Group L would set England on course for a round of 32 game in Atlanta, followed by potential last-16 match in Mexico City.
- Significant Change: The FA may decide to move between venues for the later rounds should England qualify, a significant shift from its standard practice of having a single tournament base.
- Tournament Organizers Recommendation: FIFA is understood to be actively encouraging such a itinerant strategy for the vast 2026 tournament.
After the training base is finalized, the FA will turn its attention to arranging two warm-up matches in Florida at the start of June.
