Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni Denounces Union Leader for ‘Trump’s Courtesan’ Comment
Giorgia Meloni has strongly condemned the chief of the major Italian trade union after the official labeled her as “the courtesan” of former US President Donald Trump.
Background of the Disputed Remarks
CGIL leader Maurizio Landini, the head of Italy’s CGIL labor organization, made the statement during a television appearance on Tuesday. This came just after global figures, including Meloni, attended a summit on Middle East peace in Egypt.
Landini asserted Meloni of “failing to act” to secure peace in Gaza, stating her role was limited to “serving as Trump’s courtesan”. Luckily, Italian people demonstrated to defend the dignity and honour of this country,” he commented.
Prime Minister’s Reply
Via an online post this Thursday, the Prime Minister declared that Landini was clearly blinded by a mounting resentment (which I can understand)”. She proceeded to publish a explanation of the word “courtesan”.
“I think most people are aware the primary definition associated with this term, but, for the benefit of those who might not, I’m publishing the first definition obtained from a simple web search,” Meloni explained, attaching a capture that stated: “Promiscuous woman, straight; substitute term, prostitute.”
Meloni also criticized her left-leaning critics, noting that for decades they had “lectured us on respect for women” only to then disparage a woman by “calling her a prostitute”.
Response from Landini
Reacting to the Prime Minister’s comments, the union leader maintained that there were “no sexist insults” toward Meloni and that the term was meant to imply “an underling to Trump”.
In a statement, he clarified: “During a brief interview, that is publicly available, to clarify any confusion or exploitation of the term, I made it clear what I meant – that Meloni was trailing behind Trump, she was at Trump’s court, she acted as Trump’s subordinate.”
Ties Between Meloni and Trump
Meloni has steadily built friendly relations with President Trump. In a public address at the Egypt summit, the US President faced Meloni – the only woman present at the summit – and complimented her beauty. “Across America, this could be politically fatal,” he said. “But I’ll take the risk. May I comment that you look beautiful? Since you are genuinely beautiful.”
President Trump afterwards lauded Meloni as “a role model for everyone” in regarding the English version of her book, I Am Giorgia: My Roots, My Principles, which includes a preface by his son.
Past Events
Earlier this year, Meloni also hit back after learning that altered images of Meloni and other well-known Italian females had been uploaded to a adult site, saying she was “disgusted”, and offering “empathy and assistance to the women who have been insulted, offended, and abused”.
